Constipation Remedies

July 26, 2012 by Sophie Leave a Comment

In today’s article we’re are going to take a look at constipation remedies. If you have happened upon this article, then I can only imagine that you are one of the many who suffer this intolerable affliction that affects us all from time to time.
Rather than talk about specific exercises or prescriptions that may be available from the doctor, I’m going to cover things that you personally can take charge of from within your own home to help overcome constipation.
We’ll cover such things as natural supplements, dietary changes and habits you can break to aid you in a quick and speedy recovery, without further ado.

Fats

Fat!  Yes normally fat is a bad word, but in this particular instance it’s all good. Ensuring you have a regular intake of beneficial fats such as omega 6 and omega 3 fats are not only beneficial for those who suffer from constipation, but also play many other vital roles in the body such as help with arthritis, brain function, heart disease and many other numerous benefit’s too numerous to mention.

Foodstuff such as fish oils, flaxseed oils, and ground flaxseed are a very beneficial source of omega 3 fats, these fats help coat the intestinal tract and allow for an easier and gentler bowel passing when going to the toilet.

These supplemental oils can be added to drinks or taken as tablets, if you are to consider taking flaxseeds, ensure you keep a high intake of water, not only is drinking water in its self a natural relief for constipation, but inadequate water intake whilst taking flaxseed can actually cause constipation, ironic huh!

Leafy Greens, vegetable’s and fresh fruits

Insuring you keep to at least your five a day in regards to fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens can also aid in natural constipation remedies. This particular advice should already be a part of your everyday lifestyle anyway, but particularly if you tend to suffer from constipation on a regular basis. This tip alone can start to ensure regular bowel movements daily, and be honest with yourself; do you really get your required daily intake of fruit and veg? If you are to start increasing your fruit and veg please ensure you also apply this to your water intake too, this is due to fibers ability to soak water up.

White Flour

Flour, white flour in particular may also be a culprit in the constipation you have been suffering from. This is due to the milling process; the good part of the wheat, bran in this case is lost.  The solution here is simple, try and ensure when you do eat bread from now on, it’s the brown or whole grain kind, the high fiber and benefits of the bran in your diet will far outweigh your taste of bagels and baguettes. Your colon will thank you for it too.

There are a whole host of foods that avoiding will help you avoid being constipated; the above pointers if adhered too, should certainly see you start to have a gradual relief in everyday constipation.

Beneficial foods for constipation remedies

  • Rhubarb due to the high fiber and water contained is fantastic in improving regular bowel movements. If you’re one of the many who have an aversion the taste of rhubarb, you’re in luck, as rhubarb is also available in tablet form most supermarkets in the form of Chinese rhubarb.
  • Another simple yet effective remedy is pour some luke warm water into a glass, then add roughly a quarter teaspoon of salt, to this cut a whole lime in half, then squeeze one half of the lime in to the luke warm water. This remedy can usually help with relief within the hour. This remedy should be used sparsely due to the effects of pro-longed effects of to much salt and kidney damage.
  • Pears have also been seen to be beneficial in the the treatment of constipation, and have long been used as a home constipation remedy. By simply making an effort to drink pear juice on a daily basis for the forth coming week, you should start to see some improvement and normal bowel movement, a half liter a day should do the trick.
  • This next next constipation remedy is also going to be a treat for you. Popcorn! You read that correctly, popcorn is a great source of fiber and as a consequence is of great value to people who suffer constipation. You can buy healthy popcorn, but I personally would rather just buy the corns and make it myself. Cue my popcorn recipe.

Hit the supermarket and you can search for corn that’s specifically used in popcorn. Add the kernels to a heated medium sized pot with either peanut oil or plain vegetable oil. Wait till the oil starts to sizzle then add three or four kernels. Put the lid on and as soon as these pop, take corn of the heat and add enough to cover the bottom of the pot.

Swirl the kernels around and add a small amount of butter and sugar, and leave to settle for 30 seconds to allow the kernels to heat uniformly. Put the kernels back on and allow to heat and wait for them to start popping, hope you remembered to put the lid back on!

Shake the pot above the heat until you hear no more popping and then simply add to a bowl. This one of the rare occasions that helping yourself and your diet actually tastes good.

Ensuring you live a healthy lifestyle

As above, most of the common complaints relating to people who suffer from constipation, can be remedied by just living a more active and healthy lifestyle. If you can see you aren’t getting enough fiber in your diet and you’ve been starting to suffer from small bouts of constipation, the answer is literally shouting out at you. Exercising and getting your five a day in terms of fruit and veg with added fiber will go along way to ensuring that constipation and other related symptoms become a thing of the past.

Sure this might not work for everyone, and if you have followed the above and are still suffering, then that’s when it’s time to go see the doctor, never let problems like these build if you are still suffering when leading a healthy and active lifestyle. There is more than likely an underlying problem, and that’s when you need to take the guess work out and let a qualified medical practitioner help. With that I bid you farewell, till the next time!

Bloating Remedies And Possible Bloating Causes

July 2, 2012 by Sophie 3 Comments

Bloating, sometimes and more often than not responsible for  wind or gas is, a very common occurrence from children to adults. Whilst bloating is normally relieved by the body in the form of passing wind or gas, or even belching, it’s normally nothing to be worried about. Fifteen percent of adults suffer from either passing wind or burping on a regular basis.

Yes it can be embarrassing when it arises at the most inopportune of times, but it’s a natural bodily function that happens to everyone, it just depends upon the situation and where you are if you’re to be embarrassed or not.

You also have to keep in mind, most of the time, there is more than likely nothing wrong with you, and it’s possibly just something you eat on a regular basis that’s the main culprit for this annoying, yet sometimes embarrassing problem.

Bloating and the digestive system

Before I go any further, I’ll just give you a quick rundown in layman’s terms of how the body uses food within the digestive system, this is important, so you can have some understanding of why flatulence and belching can be a common byproduct of eating.

The digestive system is responsible for the breaking down of foods. The digestive system breaks these foods down as to use this as the body’s main source of energy. However some people have a harder time than others breaking down certain food stuffs. The food that is not broken down is then transported to the colon from the intestines, where the bacteria that we all have ferments the undigested food, this in turn can result in passing wind, bloating and belching.

The problem can also be related to swallowing air, which is normally released by a burp, or air you have trapped in the small bowl, this will normally be released as gas. Whilst burping to release trapped air isn’t as embarrassing at least in modernized western societies as passing wind. passing wind, is possibly an even more common way of releasing trapped air, most adults do so at least twenty times a day.

Gulping your food down, or drinking gassy soda and a host of foods are all related to gas and belching, if you seem to suffer from wind and belching on a regular basis, you can take heart in, that it’s probably something you’re eating or drinking, or the way you consume your food.

However as I always say, if the pain is becoming too much, and bloating is effecting you to the point you can’t even touch the swollen area, then stop reading this right now! And make an appointment with your doctor, or drop by your local clinic.

For the others still here, the simplest bloating remedies available to you will be to first look at the diet you eat, and the foods that are mainly responsible for both these symptoms. This will be the easiest way of alleviating this problem promptly, simply look at the list below and either cut that particular food out of your diet, or at least cut down on its consumption heavily.

Foods associated with bloating and gas

  • Dairy products
  • High carbohydrate foods such as potatoes and wheat past
  • Fruits such as melons apricots and pears
  • Prunes (a known cause of flatulence)
  • Beans (another known cause)
  • Soda drinks, especially those containing fructose
  • All manner of onions
  • The majority of common vegetables, such as: broccoli, peas cauliflowers and carrots

These are not all the foods responsible for bloating and the associated problems, they are however the accepted main ones. Another simple yet effective way of determining what foods may be affecting you, is to simply jot down the foods you eat in a notepad after every meal, from there you can easily what meals where responsible for the bloating, and take appropriate action.

Bloating may also be cause by suffering from lactose intolerance, the signs will normally be readily seen after consuming dairy products, signs such as diarrhea after eating, stomach cramps and of course gas are indicators you may be suffering from lactose intolerance. If you feel you may be suffering these exact symptoms after dairy food consumption, then contact your doctor, where he/she will run some tests for confirmation.

Now we’ve covered causes and related food items, I shall briefly mention some natural bloating remedies you can use to help alleviate bloating.

  • Exercise is possibly number one on the natural bloating remedies list. Exercising, whether it be a short walk or jog or light fitness regime you introduce, can instigate bowel movements thereby relieving you of bloating and win
  • Probiotics whether taken by ingesting a supplement or yogurt, are beneficial for reducing gas. Probiotics are known to help the colon in replenishing the good bacteria within the colon., and as such are another great natural source for bloating remedies.
  • Herbs are number three on the list of natural bloating remedies. Ginger tea, peppermint, garlic and eucalyptus have been known to help ease the symptoms of bloating. These particular herbs have been used for centuries for just that. Chamomile tea has also been cited to be effective.
  • The above list are just some of the natural bloating remedies that have been used for years by all countries around the world, hopefully some of them will be of some use to you in your quest for to become bloat free.

This however brings us to the end of this article, till the next time.
